Prof. Iakiv Fishchenko — Cervical Spine Surgery
Prof. Iakiv Fishchenko, MD, DSc, is a spine surgeon, orthopaedic trauma surgeon and neuro-orthopaedic surgeon at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics of the NAMS of Ukraine. He specialises in the modern surgical treatment of disc herniation, stenosis and other degenerative conditions of the cervical spine. He personally consults patients, reviews MRI and CT studies, and plans and performs endoscopic procedures, ACDF and cervical disc replacement.

Over the past eight years, Prof. Iakiv Fishchenko, MD, DSc, has personally performed more than 3,000 endoscopic spine procedures and currently performs more than 400 such procedures each year. These figures refer to endoscopic spine surgery overall, not only to cervical spine procedures. For cervical spine conditions, Professor Iakiv Fishchenko personally determines the most appropriate surgical method: endoscopic disc herniation removal, ACDF or disc replacement.
For endoscopic cervical spine surgery, Prof. Iakiv Fishchenko uses exclusively a biportal endoscopic technique.
Types of surgery
- Biportal endoscopic removal of cervical disc herniation with preservation of the native disc.
- ACDF — anterior cervical discectomy, decompression of the neural structures and stabilisation using a cage.
- Cervical disc replacement with preservation of segmental motion.
- Revision decompression and stabilisation procedures following previous surgery.
- Surgery for compression of the nerve roots or spinal cord, stenosis, osteophytes and cervical spine instability.
Academic activity
Professor Iakiv Fishchenko is the author of the interactive Atlas of Biportal Endoscopic Spine Surgery, available in Ukrainian and English. The atlas contains clinical cases, descriptions of surgical approaches and the key stages of modern endoscopic spine procedures.
